The site of present-day Mansfield was scouted by Miles Standish in 1640 and settled in 1658; the town was incorporated in 1775 and named for William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, a pro-colonial member of the House of Lords.
The Fisher-Richardson House, built between 1743 and 1751 and restored in 1930, is among the town's oldest surviving structures and now operates as a local history museum.
