Lexington was incorporated as a town in 1713.

On April 19, 1775, British regulars and colonial militia clashed on the Lexington Battle Green in the opening engagement of the American Revolutionary War; eight Lexington militiamen were killed and ten were wounded.

D.C. Heath, a publishing company, was founded in 1885 at 125 Spring Street in Lexington and was headquartered there until its 1995 sale to Houghton Mifflin.
