A little history
Hubbardston was incorporated as a separate district in 1767, carved from the Northeast Quarter of Rutland, and named for Thomas Hubbard, Commissary General of the Province of Massachusetts and Treasurer of Harvard College.
Captain Adam Wheeler of Hubbardston led local farmers in Shays' Rebellion in 1786, marching eighty men to Worcester to help take over the courthouse in protest of debt foreclosures.
The first backhoe swing frame was invented in Hubbardston in 1947 by Vaino J. Holopainen and Roy E. Handy Jr., whose company Wain-Roy Corporation was based in town.
