A little history
Egremont was first settled in 1722 by Dutch farmers from New York, with English settlers arriving soon after; the town was incorporated in 1761.
General Henry Knox passed through North Egremont around New Year's 1776, hauling cannons from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston, an event marked today by a Knox Trail marker.
South Egremont grew as an agricultural and small-industry center after a state turnpike (now Route 23) was built through it in 1801, with shoe manufacturing and carriage-axle production along Karner Brook.
