A little history
Clinton was first settled in 1654 as part of Lancaster and was incorporated as its own town on March 14, 1850, taking its name from the DeWitt Clinton Hotel in New York.
The town became a center of carpet and wire manufacturing in the 19th century, led by the Bigelow Carpet Company, which by 1890 made it a nationally known mill town.
Construction of the Wachusett Dam, completed in 1908, created the Wachusett Reservoir and flooded a substantial portion of Clinton and neighboring towns for the Boston-area water supply.
