Chesterfield was first settled in 1760 and officially incorporated in 1762, taking its name from the Earl of Chesterfield.
The town's early economy relied on agriculture and Merino sheep wool, and later on sawmills, tanneries and cloth-dressing mills, before that industry declined by the early 20th century.
