A little history
Sprague was incorporated in 1861 from portions of Lisbon and Franklin, and named for William Sprague III, the former Rhode Island governor and senator who developed its industrial base.
The Baltic Cotton Mill, built on the Shetucket River on land Sprague purchased in 1856, gave the village of Baltic its name; the original mill burned down in 1877.
The Baltic Historic District, encompassing nearly the entire village, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
