Sharon was incorporated in 1739 and named for the biblical Plain of Sharon; the area was originally called Poconnuck by the Mattabesec people, part of the Wappinger confederacy.

The town has six sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Ebenezer Gay House and the Sharon Historic District along Main Street.
