Land comprising present-day Redding was purchased from the Fairfield colony in 1668, then called Northfield; the town incorporated separately in 1767.
General Israel Putnam's Continental Army wintered in Redding in 1778-1779, an encampment of about 3,000 troops sometimes called "Connecticut's Valley Forge," now preserved at Putnam Memorial State Park.
Rail service reached Redding in 1852 via the Danbury and Norwalk Railroad.
