The town was incorporated in 1713 on land purchased from local tribes in 1686 in a transaction known as the Mashamoquet Purchase, and it takes its name from Pontefract in West Yorkshire, England. It's known for its boarding schools, vineyards and farmland, and for Mashamoquet Brook State Park, where General Israel Putnam is said to have killed the last wolf in Connecticut at the Wolf Den.

A little history
The land that became Pomfret was purchased from local Native Americans in 1686 in a transaction known as the Mashamoquet Purchase, and the town was incorporated in 1713.
