A little history
The area was first settled around 1660 as part of Windsor, on land used by the Poquonock people, and was organized as the Parish of Wintonbury in 1736, a name combining Windsor, Farmington and Simsbury.
Bloomfield incorporated as its own town on May 28, 1835.
The town's economy shifted from shade-tobacco farming to a postwar Hartford suburb beginning in the 1950s; Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (later Cigna) built its headquarters there.
